“Guardian of the North” 18K Gold White Nephrite, Diamond & Topaz Pendant

This sculptural polar bear pendant "Kingdom of Ice" is conceived as a miniature wearable work of art, capturing the quiet strength and beauty of the Arctic landscape. Handcrafted in 18K yellow gold, the composition brings together fine jewelry, gemstone carving, hot enamel, sculptural goldwork, and precious gemstone setting in an intimate three-dimensional scene.

At the center of the pendant is a polar bear individually hand-carved from natural white nephrite. The bear is shaped directly from the gemstone by hand, with finely carved details defining its body and fur while preserving the soft, luminous character of the nephrite. Its sculptural form rests upon an 18K yellow gold ice formation, creating the focal point of the composition.

The Arctic setting is brought to life through light blue transparent hot enamel, creating a luminous, glass-like background behind the hand-carved nephrite bear. Sculpted 18K yellow gold branches and leaves frame the scene, while natural sky blue topaz, diamonds, and pearls are incorporated throughout the composition, introducing icy blue color, brilliance, and soft luster.

The reverse of the pendant is treated as an integral part of the jewel rather than simply a functional backing. It is finished in 18K yellow gold with additional sculptural botanical ornamentation, sky blue topaz and diamonds surrounding a mountain landscape, allowing precious materials and decorative detail to continue across the reverse and giving the pendant a complete presentation from every viewing angle. 

The gold composition begins as an original sculpture hand-carved in wax within the atelier. Once the model has been completed, it is transferred into 18K yellow gold using the traditional lost-wax casting technique, preserving the sculptural forms of the original wax. The gold components are subsequently refined, assembled, chased, polished, enameled, and gemstone-set by hand. The white nephrite polar bear is separately carved by hand before being carefully incorporated into the finished composition.

Measuring approximately 4 cm (1.6 inches) in diameter, its circular format creates the impression of looking into a miniature Arctic landscape, with the polar bear, gold ice formation, gemstones, pearls, and transparent blue enamel forming a layered three-dimensional scene.

Each pendant is individually handcrafted and made to order, with an estimated production lead time of approximately three months from order confirmation. As every white nephrite polar bear is carved individually from natural material and every gold composition is finished by hand, subtle variations are inherent to the creation of each example.

In addition to the completed jewel, the client receives a complimentary signed original design sketch prepared by the atelier. The drawing forms part of the artistic process and accompanies the finished pendant as an element of its provenance..

From the initial drawing and wax sculpture to gemstone carving, enameling, setting, and final finishing, each stage is developed and executed individually.

The pendant is created within the Konforti family atelier, a multi-generational workshop led by Inga and Barak Konforti and founded by master artists Ella and Yuri Bogoslavsky. The atelier brings together traditional sculpture, lost-wax casting, gemstone carving, hot enamel, precious-metal work, and fine jewelry techniques in the creation of highly detailed wearable works of art.
