This made to order chess set “Napoleon vs. Alexander I”, A Masterpiece of Imperial History in the Fabergé Tradition.
This extraordinary sculptural chess set brings to life the historic confrontation between Napoleon and Alexander I during the pivotal war of 1812. Every element, from the imperial portraits to the architectural motifs - has been crafted with meticulous historical accuracy and artistic refinement, drawing upon the legendary decorative traditions and techniques of the House of Fabergé.
The principal figures of the era, Emperor Napoleon I, Empress Joséphine, Emperor Alexander I, and Empress Elizabeth Alexeievna, are sculpted with remarkable portrait likeness. The soldiers and officers on both sides wear uniforms faithfully reflecting the military attire of the early 19th century, evoking the grandeur and solemnity of the Napoleonic age.
At the center of the chessboard’s side panels appear the two cathedrals most symbolically tied to the opposing rulers: Notre-Dame de Paris, representing Napoleon’s influence, and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, honoring Alexander I. Between them stands the Mary, Mother Of Jesus, while crossed sabers on shield motifs emphasize the theme of conflict and victory.
The monumental chessboard measures 50 × 50 × 8 cm, with the individually sculpted pieces ranging from 9 to 12 cm in height.
The entire composition weighs 20 kg, including 16 kg of pure silver.
Each chess piece is finished with hot transparent enamel in the demanding technique of poured hot enamel, producing a luminous glass-like surface. The decorative elements of the board are adorned with hot transparent enamel over guilloché, a hallmark technique famously used in Fabergé masterpieces. The precision of the guilloché patterns, the clarity of the enamel, and the refined metalwork create the same depth, radiance, and opulence associated with imperial Fabergé objets d’art.
The bases of the pieces are inlaid with blue topazes and garnets, while the board itself incorporates blue topazes, garnets, and lapis lazuli.
Accents of 24-karat gold plating, combined with deep silver patina, further highlight the sculptural detail and regal character of the composition.
The chessboard also includes diamond inlay totaling 15 carats, underscoring its status as a rare collector’s treasure.
Traditional haute-joaillerie methods-chasing, engraving, and artistic casting, all executed in the Fabergé style-are brought together to create a work that fuses historical storytelling with the craftsmanship of the great Russian imperial workshops.
